Miri police investigating commotion during Sukma 2024 silat quarter-final match between Sarawak and FT

MIRI, Aug 22: Miri Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, confirmed that a police report was lodged following a heated incident during the silat quarter-final match in the 45kg women’s category on Aug 21nwhich led to a temporary halt in proceedings as spectators began throwing bottles onto the ring.

The match between Sarawak’s Iman Syakila Mahdi and the Federal Territories’ Nurin Alyaa’ Damia was disrupted by the unruly behaviour, prompting immediate action from the authorities.

“So far, we have received only one police report on this case,” Alexson disclosed at a press conference here today.

The report, which was filed by a member of the event’s board of directors, has led to an ongoing investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code, he added.

Alexson also said that the police have intensified security measures at the stadium.

“We have put in place a task force to enhance the security at this stadium,” he explained. While he did not disclose the specific number of officers deployed, he gave assurance that the strength of the security detail has been doubled since the incident.

The investigation will focus on reviewing available footage and gathering evidence to determine the cause of the disturbance.

Alexson emphasised that the situation is under control and that there is no immediate threat to the safety of the spectators or the athletes.

“As of now, there is nothing to worry about concerning the safety of the Miri Indoor Stadium. We have not received any information regarding threats or matters that could compromise the security or comfort of the players,” he said.

The police are also looking into the possibility of individuals misusing accreditation passes, but no conclusive findings have been made yet.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to ensure that such incidents do not recur during the event.

In response to last night’s incident, authorities have decided that all silat matches scheduled for today (Aug 22) will proceed without audience participation. — DayakDaily
