MIRI, Oct 1: Police have arrested a 27-year-old foreign man and seized methamphetamine worth RM6,274.40 in two separate raids conducted in the city on Monday (Sept 29).
Miri District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID), followed a public tip-off.
“In the first raid at a shop in the Jalan Bintang Jaya Utama area, police arrested the suspect and seized 5.64 grammes of methamphetamine valued at RM620.40,” he said in a statement today.
He added that a second raid was conducted with the guidance of the suspect by the roadside at Lorong Jalan Sze Chuan 2, where police recovered another 51.40 grammes of methamphetamine worth RM5,654.
The total seizure amounted to RM6,274.40, enough to endanger the lives of an estimated 285 users, Mohd Farhan said.
An initial urine screening also tested the suspect positive for methamphetamine use, though he has no prior criminal record.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B and Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted under Section 39B, the suspect may face the death penalty or life imprisonment along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Section 39A(1) carries a sentence of between two to five years in prison and between three to nine strokes of the cane.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days, from Sept 30 to Oct 7, under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist further investigations.
Mohd Farhan said the NCID is actively tracking down remaining syndicate members still at large to cripple the network completely.
“This success is the result of continuous intelligence and public cooperation. The Royal Malaysia Police will not compromise with any party involved in drug distribution. Possession, trafficking, or protecting drug-related activities is a serious offence under the law,” he stressed.
He reiterated that the police are committed to fighting drugs to protect current and future generations, reminding that drugs remain the nation’s number one enemy.
Members of the public with information on drug-related activities are urged to contact the NCID hotline at 012-2087222. — DayakDaily
