MIRI, Nov 21: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has raised concerns over the maintenance delays at the Miri Public Swimming Pool.

The swimming pool has been intermittently closed for internal maintenance since April 2022, with several brief reopenings.

However, it has been closed since July 2023.

Chiew expressed ongoing concerns as necessary repairs have not been completed.

“My office has received numerous complaints from the public regarding frequent damage to the Miri Public Swimming Pool, resulting in the pool often being closed for repairs,” he told the media here today.

The recent damage, particularly involving the main water pump, has resulted in the pool’s closure until the issue is resolved.

” There is also a significant concern about the longstanding malfunction of the nighttime lighting system, leading to frequent closures before this,” he pointed out.

National Sports Council (MSN) Management Board member Alan Ling also expressed concern about the closure’s impact on athletes’ training opportunities and the community’s access to a recreational resource.

Despite expressions of concern to relevant authorities, various reasons and explanations, such as the need to order pump components directly from the original manufacturer, have been provided, contributing to prolonged delays.

Chiew, with assistance from Alan Ling, has engaged with the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports, requesting an allocation of RM500,000 to assist in the Miri Public Swimming Pool maintenance project. — DayakDaily
