Desperate father steals money for baby supplies, gets jail time

KUCHING, Nov 21: In an act driven by desperation to purchase diapers and wet wipes for his one-month-old baby girl, a 27-year-old father was caught stealing RM130 from his employer at a Japanese restaurant last Monday (Nov 13).

The father, employed as a cook with a monthly income of RM2,100, found himself sentenced to three days in prison and fined RM1,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

The man pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 381 of the Penal Code.


Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan ordered the accused to serve an additional one month in prison if he failed to pay the fine.

According to the charge, he allegedly stole RM130 from his employer in a Japanese restaurant located in a prominent shopping center on Jalan Wan Alwi at around 7pm on Nov 13.

During the course of the incident, the complainant became aware through a WhatsApp group that one of the employees (the accused) had taken the money from the cashier’s machine.

The complainant instructed the accused to repay the money within 24 hours, but the accused failed to do so.

After the stipulated period, the complainant subsequently filed a police report, leading to the accused’s arrest on Nov 17. — DayakDaily
