MIRI, Jan 29: The body of the final victim of the Kampung Lereng Bukit landslide was discovered at approximately 6.06 pm today, marking a heartbreaking end to the exhaustive search and rescue operation.
According to Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the last victim, an elderly 71-year-old woman, was found beneath the rubble of a collapsed house.
This brings the total death caused by the landslide to five.
Rescue efforts, led by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, were focused on targeted areas, employing excavation equipment to carefully sift through the debris.
Alexson explained that the victim’s final location was slightly displaced from where initial searches had been concentrated, indicating possible movement in the rubble before she was ultimately found.
“With the help of excavators, firefighters, and other rescue personnel, we were able to locate the victim, who had been trapped under the concrete wall of the building,” he said.
By 6.26pm, the victim’s body had been successfully retrieved, marking the end of the search operation.
However, authorities have cautioned that the area remains at risk of further landslides. The Public Works Department (JKR) advised residents to relocate to evacuation centres for their safety.
“We have taken the initiative to move those in the affected area to safety to prevent further loss of life,” Alexson added.
The landslide, which occurred at around 2.40am, had struck two houses, affecting 12 individuals.
Five people lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries.
The remaining five escaped unharmed.
All victims of the landslide were found in a preserved state, with officials now shifting focus to securing the area and supporting displaced residents. – DayakDaily
