MIRI, Jan 29: A devastating landslide struck Kampung Lereng Bukit early this morning, claiming the life of a teenage boy while four others, including two children, remain missing.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that the landslide occurred at around 2:58am, affecting two homes. Rescuers arrived at the scene within minutes, as the site is just 3km from the nearest fire station.
Seven people were inside the first home when the disaster struck, with an adult male and a teenage girl managing to escape.
Meanwhile, all five occupants of the second home, including three teenage girls, survived the incident.
Search and rescue (SAR) teams have been working tirelessly, with the first survivor—a critically injured teenage girl—rescued at 4.46am, followed by an adult woman at 5am.
However, at around 6am, rescuers recovered the lifeless body of a young boy.
Operations were temporarily halted at 6.30am due to electrical hazards at the site but resumed at 7.50am.
Heavy machinery, including an excavator, arrived at 8.30am to assist with digging and clearing debris to speed up the search for the remaining four female victims, aged between 8 and 71. – DayakDaily
