MIRI, Oct 18: Miri Community College today inked Certificates of Collaboration (COC) with five industry players here, in a move to enhance its students’ competency levels and work skills.

The five firms are Beyond ID Co, D.O.C Furniture, Advanced Borneo Engineering Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Advanced Metallurgy and Welding Technology Sdn Bhd, and Technical Engineering Safety Training Solution PLT (TESTS).

The college’s director Fadil Aziz said such collaborations would be expanded in stages to ensure the college would be able to produce competent workers for various industries.

“We hope that via these collaborations, we will be able to produce a competent workforce for the industry, for example, as skilled draftsmen, model manufacturing and 3D painting, furniture design, welders and technical workers.

“We need this kind of collaboration as the country is heading towards Industry 4.0, and we are fully aware of the need to produce students with a high employability rate,” he said.

Fadil said collaborations with high-impact industries, such as construction and mechanical, were regarded as strategic as these fields were among the largest contributors to the nation’s coffers.

Meanwhile, Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini commented that the college’s deal with the five companies was a win-win situation for both sides.

“I hope this initiative will realise the government’s vision to increase the number of skilled workers higher than the current 28 per cent,” she said. Her text-of-speech was read out by her representative, Ezra Uda. — DayakDaily
