MIRI, Jan 7: The Miri City Council (MCC) emergency response team is on 24-hour standby mode to respond to floods.

Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said this when questioned on the council’s flood preparedness and response plan during today’s meet-the-people session.

The session was the first held since January 8 last year due to strict Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

“At the same time, we have informed the engineering side to make sure all our drains are clean and not clogged,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yii pointed out that flooding can occur due to many reasons.

“There are many factors (that contribute to flooding); those that are within our control, and those that are beyond our control.

“For example, drains that are clogged are not able to handle heavy rainfall. There would be so much rain that the drainage system would not be able to cope, and this is beyond our control,” he explained.

“For things that are within our control, we must and will make sure that they are properly addressed,” he said.
