Minos: Calling for early election could cause public backlash

KUCHING, June 4: Calling the general election at such a turbulent time when people are in high stress over rising inflation while still reeling from the economic impact of Covid-19 could unleash a massive public backlash and break Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government, warned political pundit Dato Peter Minos.

Observing this, Minos said cooler heads were needed to prevent a misstep by the current Federal government as there is no need to rush the 15th General Election (GE15) despite alleged pressure from the ‘court cluster’ and certain groups in Umno.

“There is little mood for GE now, not at least until this year ends. Why rush for GE when people are worried about putting food on the table as inflation soars with cost of living and food and basic essentials increasing.

“If the GE is held before December this year, it is almost certain there will be a backlash. Majority of Malaysians will be unhappy and would reject those in power and the present government,” he said in a statement today.

With the current mood focus on trying to cope with inflation as majority of Malaysians are suffering the effects of rising prices, Minos observed that only the court cluster and certain groups in Umno are the most interested for an early election with ostentatious reasons of the need for speedy political stability and to take advantage of the momentum after their recent victories in Melaka and Johor.

“But many also suspect that the court cluster wanted the GE early before any adverse court decision is made against them over many criminal charges. Any unfavourable court ruling this year will likely result in the end of their political career and power.

“Even the PM (Prime Minister) and many others in Umno are not keen for an early GE. They are in the ‘goyang’ (uncertain) mood. They know people are not keen for it this year, not when the economic situation is bad,” he said.

Minos, who is also Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, also noted that many leaders do not want to give into the whims and fancies of the court cluster group.

The court cluster refers to a group of Umno MPs led by their president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who are facing a string of criminal charges in court.

“We pray and hope that the PM and the ruling government will look and consider the real issues before deciding on the GE date,” he added. — DayakDaily
