KUCHING, June 16: The Ministry of Education (MoE) will be increasing the teaching time for the Reproductive and Social Health Education Guidelines (PEERS) module when it is implemented in the 2027 School Curriculum.
The move aims to raise awareness, particularly within the school community, following public outrage over a Facebook group that shared images of schoolchildren alongside inappropriate, sexualised comments. The group came to public attention recently when a social media influencer discovered her old school photos had been posted there.
The Ministry has reported the group to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and the Facebook group has since been deleted.
“The MoE takes seriously media reports on the existence of pedophile pages on social media featuring school students. The existence of social media pages that display pornographic and immoral content needs to be curbed. It needs to be reported immediately and action taken,” Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek said in a statement.
With that, she announced that the teaching time for the PEERS module will be increased in the implementation of the 2027 School Curriculum.
The PEERS module, which was first introduced in November last year, aims to increase the level of reproductive health awareness among the community, especially students, teachers and parents.
She stressed that all MoE educational institutions are requested to comply with the guidelines to address the issue of sexual harassment.
Fadhlina also pointed out that psychosocial support services need to be further strengthened to provide support to students.
“At the same time, parents are urged to also play a proactive role at home by educating and protecting children from the threat of sexual harassment. They are responsible for ensuring that children’s dignity is preserved,” she added. – DayakDaily
