KUCHING, Sept 1: Minister of Work, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has expressed his confusion about the ongoing discussion on unity, six decades after Malaysia’s formation.
Nanta mentioned that Malaysians should be joyfully celebrating the establishment of Malaysia 60 years ago, rejoicing as a unified nation.
“I think there are too many issues that have arisen over the years. I must be very frank; I expected more progress by now. Malaysia should not still be grappling with the concept of unity after 60 years,” Nanta told SinarDaily during a special podcast collaboration with Bual Studios and Rena Sounds for Merdeka and Malaysia Day, titled ‘From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 years’ which was released today.
Nanta opined that, after six decades, Malaysians should no longer need to discuss unity, as they should already be united and focused on other aspects.
“Even if we are not entirely unified, we should, at the very least, be happier with the current situation.”
He added that he does not wish to lose hope regarding unity and feels that he has a role to play, whether in the cabinet, the government, or as a politician.
Nanta shared that, in general, the people of Sarawak share his sentiment despite living in unity and harmony.
“Sarawak is widely recognised for its harmony, and recently, it has been openly regarded as a model state. I take pride in that,” he added.
According to Nanta, Malaysians need to continue learning, which is why the government should assess the overall situation in the country to promote more unity and harmony.
He believed that unity would enable the government and its leaders to focus on more crucial matters to ensure the country’s and the state’s development.
“We must concentrate on our economic progress and the well-being of the people, among many other things we are working towards to achieve and deliver. In that regard, we are deeply committed to Sarawak,” Nanta emphasised. — DayakDaily
