KUCHING, Dec 30: The Federal government has no plans to organise a 2024 New Year countdown celebration this year, says Communications Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil.

He said it is a sign of solidarity to the Palestinian people who are now brutally oppressed by the Zionist regime of Israel and respect for the flood victims in several states, TVS reported.

“However, certain state governments or local authorities may hold a celebration programme that suits the local situation,” he told the media after officiating the general assembly of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare and Dakwah Organization (Pekida) here last night (Dec 29).

Nevertheless, Sarawak is one of the states that will organise a New Year countdown event which will take place at Kuching Waterfront tomorrow.

On the status of the 130 communication transmitter stations affected by the floods in Sabah, Kelantan, Pahang, Selangor and Terengganu, Fahmi said that so far, 53 stations have resumed operation while the rest are being repaired.

He also said the affected areas will be studied to see if it is a recurring area or a new area in terms of damage to the telecommunications tower.

Additionally, he would order site hardening to be carried out in the affected areas by upgrading communication equipment to a higher level to prevent the incident from recurring. — DayakDaily
