KUCHING, Aug 30: With domestic gas utilisation rising from six to seven per cent, Sarawak is already seeing more job opportunities for locals, and Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi believes the impact will grow exponentially if the state meets the 30 per cent target set in the Sarawak Gas Roadmap.
Speaking at the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication’s (MUT) Media Night held at a hotel here on Friday night (Aug 29), Julaihi explained that previously, only six per cent of Sarawak’s gas was utilised locally, while 94 per cent was exported overseas as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
But with the establishment of the methanol plant under Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd, he said, domestic consumption has since increased to seven per cent.
“That slight increase alone has created a significant impact by providing job opportunities for many Sarawakians, including experts and professionals now running and managing the methanol plant.
“If just one per cent can deliver such results, imagine what 30 per cent would bring. Hopefully, with a higher percentage, we will be able to provide more job opportunities in the near future,” he added. — DayakDaily
