KUCHING, July 11: A long-standing flash flood problem along Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo in Mile 7 will soon be resolved as works officially begin on a RM300,000 drainage upgrading project under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2023.

The project will involve the construction of reinforced concrete drains measuring 1.2 metres wide, up to 1.5 metres deep, and stretching 300 metres in length.

The new drains are designed to address persistent flooding issues in front of the Kota Sentosa Library, Tadika Dewan Perniagaan Batu Tujuh and the Seven Mile Community Association Hall.

Construction is expected to begin immediately and is scheduled for completion by mid-November 2025, weather permitting.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin today visited the site together with officers from the Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching to hand over the Letter of Award to the appointed contractor, Gemilang Indah.

“For years, heavy rainfall has caused overflows that disrupted daily activities, endangered road users, and created inconvenience for the public,” said Yap in a statement today.

“Apart from the flooding, the construction of new drains is urgently needed due to visible soil erosion along the roadside, which if left unattended, could compromise road stability and safety.”

Yap further said the project is part of his ongoing commitment to act on residents’ concerns and deliver infrastructure improvements that make a real difference. – DayakDaily
