KUCHING, June 6: A newly established convention centre in Metrocity, Matang—built using makeshift canopy structures that will serve as a permanent facility—officially opened its doors today.
Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, said the use of canopy structures significantly reduces construction costs, allowing the venue to offer more affordable rental rates.
“This creates opportunities for more companies, including smaller businesses, to participate in large-scale events,” he told reporters after officiating the opening ceremony at the venue.
While acknowledging that the infrastructure may not match the standards of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), he said the Metrocity Convention Centre (MCCC) serves as a viable alternative by offering competitive rates for businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to participate in large-scale exhibitions without incurring high costs.

The convention centre, which can accommodate up to 10,000 people at any one time, is designed for long-term use. Plans are already being considered to upgrade the site to enhance comfort and facilities.
Fazzrudin, who is also the Tupong assemblyman, further commended Sustainable Management Sdn Bhd for sponsoring and building the facility, adding that the permanent structure will serve the community for years to come.
“The impact is already being felt. A big event like this draws foot traffic not only to the exhibition but also to surrounding businesses, including the Metrocity N6 Youth Night Market (Metrocity Uptown) and nearby shops,” he said, noting the spill-over effect on the local economy.

The MCCC is currently hosting the inaugural Modern Home Living Expo from June 6 to 8, featuring 250 booths with participation from 80 exhibitors, many of whom have taken multiple booths to showcase a wide range of home and lifestyle products.
The event is drawing more than 10,000 visitors daily, making it one of the largest public gatherings in the area to date.
Also present were Sustainable Management Sdn Bhd executive director Winston Chang, managing director Nicholas Tiong, Lee Wai Tent Specialist Sdn Bhd director Dato Sri Kor King Toy, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) councillor Nicholas Wung, Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKM) director Semawi Mohamad, MLE Exhibition & Event Sdn Bhd director Eng Yi Chun, Tupong Pemanca Roshidi Junai, and Padungan Kapitan Lim Chuan Chan. – DayakDaily
