KUCHING, Feb 4: Medan Saberkas in Miri is now fitted with piped natural gas supply, the first in Sarawak under a pilot project by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), that is providing 67 traders in the first phase of the initiative with affordable, reliable and clean energy.
At the launching ceremony, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that natural gas is a less carbon intensive option compared to other fossil fuels that would bring immediate and long-term benefits for its users, whether in residential, commercial and industrial.
“The provision of piped gas supply to Medan Saberkas Miri is the latest initiative under the big umbrella of PCDS (Post-Covid Development Strategy) 2030 to benefit small and medium traders.
“The spirit of cooperation and collaboration by all parties over the implementation of this pilot project demonstrates how we tackle the energy trilemma, ensuring energy security, sustainability and affordability for the Miri community,” he said during the launching event in Miri today which was streamed live through Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) social media.
His text-of-speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
This pilot project at Medan Saberkas, Abang Johari added, reflects Petros’ commitment to maximise positive impacts within the community in Miri and highlights the significant progress of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR).
Earlier on, Miri City Council (MCC) chairman Adam Yii pointed out that the subsequent phase of the initiative would enable another 46 stalls in Medan Saberkas Miri to enjoy similar facilities.
“I want to thank all the traders for their patience and cooperation during the time of installation.
“I hope the traders will take good care of the latest utility, keep the area clean and tidy, and together put forth our best offers and services to the customers and visitors,” he urged.
With the completion of this project, Medan Saberkas Miri was also further upgraded with permanent roofing, clean water and reliable power supply as well as a comprehensive package of council services.
MCC is now also undertaking the installation of digital signages as part of the implementation of the Miri Smart City Programme where MCC leverages on incorporating digital technology and digitisation with the aim to provide better and safer services.
With that, Abang Johari also suggested that MCC explore more possibilities of linking Medan Saberkas Miri to the equally popular Taman Bulatan located opposite the road to turn the whole area into an all-in-one well-developed residential, commercial and recreational attraction.
