KUCHING, April 17: Kuching recorded the highest number of movement control order (MCO) offenders with 36 out of 112 arrests made in Sarawak within the past 24 hours.
State deputy police commissioner, Datuk Dev Kumar, said of the 112 arrests, 36 individuals have been charged in court.
Miri recorded 15 arrests followed by Padawan (14), Serian (9), Simunjan (6), four each in Bintulu, Meradong and Sarikei, Saratok (3), two each in Sibu, Kota Samarahan, Bau, Kapit, Lubok Antu, Tatau and Lawas, and one each in Betong, Lundu and Dalat.
Since the MCO was enforced on March 18, a total of 887 individuals have been arrested and 520 charged in court, he said.
“Under phase three MCO, which kicked off on April 15, police will no longer issue compound or fine, as well as warning or advice.
”Offenders will be brought straight to the police station and detained in the lockup if necessary. They could also be remanded,” Dev said in a statement.
If convicted, offenders will be fined not more than RM1,000 or jail not more than six months or both.
Police have mounted roadblocks throughout Sarawak and will conduct thorough checks on every vehicles and individuals to ensure compliance with MCO, he continued. — DayakDaily
