MIRI, Jan 3: Miri City Council (MCC) mayor Adam Yii has apologised to Mirians for not organising a countdown event to usher in the 2020 new year.

Noting the popular demand for the celebration, he promised that from now on, the Council will plan for a countdown event.

“I sincerely apologise for that, and due to popular demand, we (the city council) will organise the countdown event from now onward.

“If this is what the people want, we are happy to provide. After all, the council is there to serve the people,” he said after a ‘meet-the-people’ session at Miri Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) at Jalan Kwangtung here today.

Yii was responding to a local Chinese daily report highlighting that Mirians were unhappy with the Council for not organising a countdown event this year.

He explained that the Council has to make wise decisions when it comes to spending taxpayers’ money.

“We thought about organising the (countdown) event which will involve public money but at the same time, we also note that various organisations were also holding this kind of event. So we decided not to compete with others,” he added.— DayakDaily
