MCC mobilises Crime Prevention Patrol Teams in residential areas to ensure SOP compliance

MIRI, May 17:  Miri City Council will mobilise the Crime Prevention Patrol Teams (Pasukan Rondaan) to make sure there is no breach of SOP (standard operating procedures) such as social gatherings in residential areas.

MCC mayor Adam Yii in a statement today said in the light of the deteriorating situation under the Covid-19 pandemic in Miri, Miri City Council will initiate the measure to prevent further spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Crime Prevention Patrol Teams (Pasukan Rondaan) set up by its Neighbourhood Committees (Jawatankuasa Penduduk) will identify any social gatherings in residential areas and report the findings to the authority i.e. Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) for possible action such as issuing of compound notices for breach of SOP imposed under Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

Yii pointed out that Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin who is also the Minister-In-Charge for MDDMC had on May 14, 2021 stated that MDDMC would activate community policing to detect any social gathering which is being prohibited under current CMCO as social gatherings have been the main cause of five Covid-19 clusters being identified in Miri City of which the latest one is labeled as Jalan Lilin Cluster due to the holding of a birthday party.

“The current role of Council’s Pasukan Rondaan is to conduct beat duty around their neighbourhood so as to assist the Police Department to prevent crime activities such as stealing or damaging to private and public properties and house break-ins.

“The new responsibility will enable Pasukan Rondaan to act as ‘mata-mata’ for MDDMC to identify any social gatherings which could eventually prevent the residential areas becoming hot spots of Covid-19 outbreak,” said Yii.

Yii said the idea of forming Pasukan Rondaan or crime prevention patrol teams  materialised in 2017, a year after he became Miri City Mayor.

“Pasukan Rondaan is a disciplined set up with proper manual and SOP in carrying out their voluntary duties.

“This has proven effective with many achievements in crime prevention in particular at Pujut, Piasau and Krokop residential areas in the past,” said Yii.

It is thus Yii’s belief that it is appropriate for Pasukan Rondaan to undertake community policing in detecting any social gatherings for MDDMC. — DayakDaily
