KUCHING, Sept 16: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainability by winning the 2023 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award under SDG Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.
This prestigious recognition was conferred for their remarkable project, the ‘Upgrading of Traffic Garden, Recreation Garden and Open Spaces of Kenyalang Park Housing Estate’.
MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng accepted the award during the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia award ceremony held at LS Convention Hall, Sunway Iskandar Puteri in Johor yesterday (Sept 15).
He emphasised that this honour not only reflects the dedication of MBKS team but also serves as an inspiring example for other cities and regions.
“It brings me immense joy to share that MBKS is not only the city council in Sarawak to receive this honour but also represents the entire nation of Malaysia. This acknowledgment will motivate us to continue pushing the boundaries of sustainability and innovation.
“As we receive this award, let us remember that sustainability is not a destination but a continuous journey. The spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be our guiding light. It is not just for us; it is for our children, our grandchildren, and the generations beyond. We owe it to them to ensure that the world we leave behind is one of prosperity, harmony, and well-being,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Wee attributed this remarkable achievement to the MBKS team, whose dedication, tireless efforts, and unwavering determination were the cornerstone of their success.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian for his steadfast support, understanding of the importance of sustainability, and invaluable guidance in navigating challenges.
“Dr Sim played a pivotal role in transforming MBKS’s vision into reality,” he said.
Meanwhile, the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award (JCIM SDA) is granted to sustainable projects or businesses conducted by Malaysian companies and organisations that advance any of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).
The objective of the JCIM SDA is to raise awareness of UNSDG in public and recognise companies or NGOs that have organised projects that help advance these goals or implemented sustainable initiatives in their business operations. — DayakDaily
