KUCHING, Jan 16: Renovation works are underway at the children’s playground in Kuching Park, Jalan Padungan, following the commencement of a safety flooring upgrade by Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council-funded project has been awarded to Era Rafiqa Sdn Bhd with a contract sum of RM319,200.

Construction commenced on Dec 22, 2025 and is expected to be completed by Feb 21, 2026.

“The upgrading works will involve the removal of the existing worn-out rubber flooring and its replacement with a new impact-absorbing playground safety surface made from recycled SBR, or Styrene-Butadiene Rubber, granules,” he told reporters after handing over the project site to the contractor today.

He said the SBR granules are produced from end-of-life tyres that are recovered, processed and repurposed into high-value products for public infrastructure.

“Moreover, these recycled tyres are from Sarawak, and the production of the SBR is also carried out in Sarawak. So these are purely Sarawak-made.

“We are encouraging contractors to support the recycling agenda and to be part and parcel of our efforts to protect the environment,” he added.

Kuching Park is undergoing renovation works until Feb 21, 2026.

According to Wee, the upgrading works reflect MBKS’s commitment to building a city that is safe, inclusive and caring for all generations, in line with its Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and ongoing efforts to create an age-friendly city.

“Moving forward, we will see an increase in elderly parking and OKU parking facilities throughout the city,” he said. — DayakDaily
