KUCHING, Dec 31: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is set to launch the ‘Love Your Markets’ Campaign in 2025, in alignment with Kuching’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the campaign aims to encourage the local community to support markets and hawker centres as key sources of unique Sarawak ingredients.

“As part of this campaign, we will upgrade existing markets and hawker centres in phases to enhance their appeal and ensure they remain dynamic hubs for community interaction and culinary experiences,” he said in his New Year 2025 message today.

Wee added that these improvements align with broader preparations for a new gastronomy centre, which is currently under construction and set to open in 2027.

On MBKS’s Green Initiative, Wee highlighted the council’s efforts to upgrade parks, including Hui Sing Recreation Park, to foster community engagement, recreation, and relaxation.

“These upgrades include better walking paths, expanded play areas for children, and new seating and shaded areas for families to gather.

“The enhancements will also feature improved landscaping, increased greenery, and eco-friendly features to promote sustainability.

“These efforts not only make the parks more accessible and enjoyable for users of all ages but also encourage healthier lifestyles, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to the overall well-being of our residents,” he added.

In embracing innovation, Wee said Kuching is progressing towards becoming a Smart City with the gradual implementation of e-submissions for processes like building plans, tenders, and licensing, to improve efficiency and transparency, benefitting businesses and residents alike.

Wee expressed optimism about the year ahead, emphasising that these initiatives aim to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and forward-looking Kuching South. — DayakDaily
