KUCHING, Oct 17: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has gained valuable insights and explored potential partnerships in disaster-risk monitoring, early-warning systems, and climate-adaptive urban design through its participation in the 16th United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Environmental Technology Expert Group Meeting (EGM) held today in Nagoya, Japan.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who attended the EGM, joined mayors, scientists, and urban experts from across Asia and the Pacific to discuss how technology, innovation, and community participation can strengthen cities’ resilience against the growing threats of climate-related disasters.

The event, jointly organised by the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UN-Habitat ROAP), the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD), and the City of Nagoya, focuses on advancing disaster risk reduction technologies, climate adaptation, and sustainable urban resilience.

Wee’s invitation to the meeting reflects international recognition of Kuching South’s ongoing commitment to sustainable, people-centred urban management, where technology is harnessed to enhance community wellbeing.

“Cities must be ready not only technologically, but also socially and mentally for the challenges that climate change brings.

“Disaster resilience begins with people. Our approach in Kuching South has always been about the 3Ps: People, Public, and Private partnership, where innovation connects communities, policies, and purpose,” he said in a media release today.

Under Wee’s leadership, MBKS continues to align its programmes and policies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities through initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, inclusivity, and urban preparedness.

The UN-Habitat meeting provided a strategic platform for Kuching South to exchange knowledge and foster collaborations that will strengthen its disaster resilience and climate adaptation strategies, reaffirming MBKS’s role as a regional leader in people-centric, sustainable urban innovation. — DayakDaily
