KUCHING, July 14: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) staff have personally forked out their own monies to help tenants of KMC Flats pay rent.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng disclosed that there are some 10 to 20 families who truly could not afford to pay their rent, thus he and his team decided to help these families.

As Kuching is still in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Wee believes that everyone can act and work in solidarity to help the less fortunate.

“The rental here at KMC Flats is very cheap, ranging between RM3 to RM5 per day because it is also subsidised by the government. However, for those who cannot afford to pay, our council staff and myself have willingly taken it up by sponsoring them,” Wee said at during the food aid distribution at KMC Flats here this morning.

There are 532 families living in KMC Flats, with an average of two persons per family.

Meanwhile, Wee added that MBKS has written to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to seek approval to give at least 25 per cent rental discount to tenants as a relief measure to reduce their financial burden in view of the current Covid-19 situation. — DayakDaily
