KUCHING, July 19: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called on all Sarawakians to set aside their differences and unite in showing pride and love for Sarawak during the upcoming 722 Walk on Tuesday (July 22), held in celebration of Sarawak Day.

In a heartfelt appeal, Wee urged people from all walks of life to come together in the spirit of unity, emphasising that true patriotism extends beyond symbolic gestures.

“Everyone has different views and backgrounds, but on this special day, we come together as one people under one Sarawak. True patriotism is shown not just in words or by waving flags, but through action… through unity, respect, and love for our homeland,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook Live session today.

For the first time in history, Kuching’s three local councils namely MBKS, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will jointly organise the 722 Walk to commemorate Sarawak Day, with MBKS taking the lead this year.

The 3km walk will begin at 6am from MBKS Boulevard and conclude at the Kuching Waterfront, passing through key landmarks including the Darul Hana Bridge and ending at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku, where the tallest flagpole stands. The event is expected to draw over 1,000 participants.

Wee encouraged everyone to embrace the spirit of Sarawak Day by wearing the State colours of red, yellow, and black, or dressing in traditional or cultural attire, stressing that the event is open to all regardless of background or beliefs.

“There’s no need for invitations. This is about Sarawakians walking together, standing tall and proud to mark one of the most significant days in our history,” he said, adding that the event aims to foster a deeper sense of identity and belonging among Sarawakians.

Wee also reminded everyone that Sarawak Day is not just a celebration, but a moment of reflection on Sarawak’s journey and the responsibility of its people.

“Being Sarawakian means more than feeling proud. It’s about asking ourselves what we have done for Sarawak and how we can contribute to its future.

“At the end of the day, we must understand this principle: the minority must accept the majority’s decision, but the majority must also respect the views and concerns of the minority. This is how we resolve issues harmoniously and move forward together; not through conflict or hate. We all live under one roof; we are all Sarawakians, and there’s no reason for grudges,” he said.

He also cautioned against allowing politics to divide people, stressing that a positive mindset is essential in building a strong and united Sarawak.

The programme will feature light refreshments, a Zumba warm-up session, patriotic songs, and a flag-raising ceremony at Dataran Ibu Pertiwiku. Next year, DBKU will lead the organisation of the 722 Walk.

“This is more than just a walk. It’s about strengthening our unity, celebrating our identity, and showing the world what it truly means to be Sarawakian,” Wee added, encouraging all Sarawakians to come forward and participate.
