KUCHING, Jan 18: The tragic accident on Jalan Stutong Baru, which claimed five lives, served as a poignant reminder for parents to engage with their children about the importance of safe and responsible driving.
It also highlights the responsibility of every driver to be mindful and courteous on the road.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasised that this tragedy underscores a simple but vital truth: we all share the road and the responsibility to keep one another safe.
“Whether we are behind the wheel, riding a motorcycle, or walking, each of us has a duty to be mindful, careful, and act with the understanding that every life on the road matters.
“Parents and guardians, I urge you to talk to your children about the importance of safe and responsible driving. Teach them to respect the rules because those rules aren’t just guidelines; they save lives,” he said in a statement.
His remarks followed the devastating crash on Jan 14, caused by a 16-year-old boy driving without a license. The teenager lost control of the vehicle, veering into the opposite lane, where it collided with two cars and two motorcycles.
As a city, Wee reaffirmed MBKS’s commitment to improving road infrastructure, enhancing safety measures, and ensuring the streets are as safe as possible.
“As the local government, MBKS is dedicated to ensuring road safety. We will continue to provide feedback and collaborate with the Public Works Department (JKR) on key roads like Jalan Stutong Baru,” he stated.
However, the Mayor stressed that government actions alone cannot solve this issue. It is up to all citizens—whether drivers, passengers, cyclists, or pedestrians—to look out for one another and do the right thing.
Wee also extended his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
“In times like these, it is crucial for us to come together as a community. Let us show compassion to those who are grieving. We must avoid speculation or the sharing of harmful images and respect the dignity of those who are hurting,” he urged. — DayakDaily
