KUCHING, Sept 10: A more pressing concern today is that many parents permit their children to regularly use smartphones, which negatively impacts their development, opined Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
Wee stressed that it is a serious issue because certain mobile phone apps are unsuitable for children due to their age-inappropriate content.
“A further negative effect is that some children are so dependent on daily smartphone use that they develop an addiction.
“I believe it is important for us to make a concerted effort to address the issue of children using smartphones,” said Wee during his ShallWeeTalk session streamed live yesterday (Sept 9) on his official Facebook Page.
The mayor also brought up the point that children are the future pillars of the country, and because of this, investing in children is the best investment because it not only safeguards children but also creates a healthier society for the generations that come after them.
“I believe that investing in children is absolutely the right thing to do, from childhood through adulthood.
“Therefore, I advise parents to spend more time with their kids if they have the time to understand them better.”
Furthermore, he expressed hope that parents and the general public do not ignore that children may have mental health issues, particularly if they do not have anyone to talk to, causing them to isolate themselves.
Wee added that MBKS will join forces with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Miri City Council (MCC), Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) on the child-friendly city (CFC) policy, which will ensure children’s basic rights. — DayakDaily
