KUCHING, Feb 15: Ahead of the Chinese New Year holidays, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has reminded residents to switch off unused electrical appliances, avoid overloading power sockets with festive decorations, and make sure their homes are well secured before leaving.
He stressed that although festive decorations add joy and colour, they can pose serious fire hazards if not handled responsibly, as overloaded sockets, faulty wiring, and prolonged use of electrical devices may lead to overheating and increase the risk of residential fires.
At the same time, unattended homes may become targets for break-ins if basic security measures are neglected.
“With many families travelling or returning to their hometowns during the festive season, it is important to ensure that homes are left in a safe and secure condition.
“Turning off unused electrical appliances, checking door and window locks, activating alarm systems if available, and ensuring that decorative lighting is properly installed can significantly reduce both fire and burglary risks,” he said in a press release.
He also reminded residents who plan to travel to inform trusted relatives or neighbours to keep an eye on their homes, as simple measures like these can help detect anything unusual early and ensure a quick response if needed.
“Let us celebrate the Chinese New Year with peace of mind by taking these preventive steps. A safe and secure home ensures a happy and worry-free festive season for everyone,” he said. — DayakDaily
