KUCHING, May 9: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng today honoured the spirit of motherhood and family devotion by distributing flowers and longevity buns to hawkers and members of the public across several markets and food centres in conjunction with Mother’s Day, celebrating the love, sacrifice, and resilience of mothers in the community.
Accompanied by councillors Chai Ju Loon, Judy Kho, and Albert Tay, Wee visited Foochow Market, Bintawa Market, Temple foodcourt, Sungai Apong Market, and Pending jetty, where the meaningful outreach effort was warmly received by traders and visitors alike.
The initiative was aimed at appreciating mothers, women hawkers, and senior citizens who continue to contribute tirelessly to their families and the wider community.
Speaking during the programme, Wee said mothers play a vital role in shaping strong families, nurturing caring communities, and fostering a compassionate society.
He noted that many hawkers in Kuching South work long hours every day to sustain their livelihoods, and their sacrifices and dedication deserve continuous recognition and appreciation.
“Mother’s Day is not only a celebration, but also a reminder of the importance of love, respect, care, and family values. A strong city begins with strong families and caring communities,” he said in a statement today.
Wee also stressed that Kuching South has long embraced people-centred development, where community well-being, inclusiveness, and family values remain central pillars in building a harmonious and caring city.
He added that the distribution of flowers and longevity buns symbolised blessings of happiness, good health, long life, and family togetherness, reflecting the multicultural spirit and unity within Kuching South. — DayakDaily
