KUCHING, Jan 18: Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng celebrated Chinese New Year early with the residents of KMC flats at Jalan Padungan by bringing them festive goodies and gifts.

Arriving at KMC multi purpose hall at 8.30am, they were greeted by residents who came slightly earlier as it was raining.

As part of MBKS’ annual event, today’s caring community programme held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration saw residents receiving frozen Batang Ai tilapia fish, mandarin oranges and face masks.

Wee said they have been and will continue to prioritise creating a caring and loving society within its jurisdiction.

“It is an honour for us to serve the people and we want to know that our Sarawak government under Gabungan Pakatan Sarawak (GPS) cares for them. At the same time, I urged everyone else to play their role as well,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government for allocating a special community grant to MBKS for this purpose and they could allocate some 500 festive bags.

Wee appealed to members of the public who wish to donate to the less fortunate to approach the council.

He added that it is not how much one can give, but it is their empathy for society that counts.

Meanwhile, Wee appealed to members of the public, especially politicians, to stop creating friction and bickering over issues.

“We have to learn not only from past mistakes but move forward. If there is anything that is good for the people, we can sit down and discuss it. As a council, we will support such a move. For their sake, let us work together instead of pointing fingers, accusing one another.

“You can write or express your opinion anywhere including social media for your publicity but please do not create hatred,” he added. — DayakDaily
