KUCHING, July 10: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called on city residents to preserve the ‘gotong-royong’ spirit and change their mindset on littering.

He said as the country develops, many changes have occurred in the society, including the spirit of gotong-royong, which is fading due to the extinct culture of neighbourliness.

“As a City Council, we need the widespread participation of Kuching residents to help take care of the environment.

“Otherwise, we will see wasteful use of resources, excessive production of waste and over-dependence on enforcement measures to keep Kuching clean and green,” he said in a statement today.

He also said instead of counting on more fines and cleaning campaigns to keep the environment clean, residents can all embrace a new mindset and stop littering.

In conjunction with the Bulan Kebersihan Bandaraya 2022 campaign, Wee together with MBKS chairman of Zone 4, Cr Iskandar Sharkawi, and community leaders attended a goyong-royong at Kampung Tabuan Melayu and Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman recently. — DayakDaily
