KUCHING, Sept 13: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasises the importance of remembering cultural roots as a foundation for unity and harmony in Sarawak.

Speaking to reporters after officiating at the 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival Kuching Torch Relay Ceremony, which took place today on the grounds of the MBKS Complex, Wee highlighted the significance of Sarawak’s deep-rooted cultural heritage, saying: “We must always remember our roots and culture in order to pass them on to future generations.

“All of these cultural aspects and elements should be passed down and spread from one generation to the next.

“Because without culture, we have no roots, and without roots, we have no identity.”

At the event, the mayor represented Dato Seri Tiong King Sing, the federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC).

This year marks a significant milestone, as the cultural festival torch travelled from Limbang to Kuching, symbolising the unifying force of culture.

Wee further praised the participants for braving the scorching sun and rain earlier to transport traditional drums designed without modern tires, demonstrating their dedication to the event and what it stands for.

He also mentioned the participation of around 2,000 individuals, with leaders from various divisions and associations across Sarawak in attendance, underscoring the event’s broad appeal.

Additionally, the mayor highlighted the unity among Sarawakians, with individuals from different racial and cultural backgrounds coming together in harmony.

“Though this is a Chinese cultural festival, we wish to share it with all races in Sarawak, so that everyone can learn from and appreciate our culture,” he remarked.

Wee added that the festival received praise from Federation of Chinese Association of Malaysia President Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Goh Tian Chuan, who praised the community’s seamless coordination and effort.

“Anyone visiting Sarawak, whether for business or leisure, should immediately notice that it offers a welcoming and positive environment.

“When you arrive, you should feel the happiness around you. After all, when you’re on holiday, you want to be surrounded by people who are cheerful and at peace, not engaged in conflicts,” he said.
