KUCHING, March 27: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has successfully reduced the usage of plastic straws in its jurisdiction by 1.1 million units in the past two years through its ‘No Plastic Straw’ campaign.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council had formed a strategic partnership with NakedWonders, an organisation that produces reusable straws, as well as creating awareness on environmental protection to ensure continuity of the ‘No Plastic Straw’ campaign.

ā€œCongratulations. That is the work of the people of Kuching, where thousands of individuals are working together to reduce plastic consumption and tackle the threats to our planet. Now we must continue the fight,ā€ said Wee in his speech when officiating at the ‘Rethink Plastic: Making climate cool again’ programme held at Saradise Feast yesterday.

Meanwhile, Wee said in line with the State governmentā€™s goal to promote responsible tourism with sustainable development in Sarawak, the council is also developing eco-tourism programmes that would make Kuching clean and green.

He also said this is supported by Kuching’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, a worldwide network of cities committed to achieving the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals, including tackling climate change and protecting life on land and life below water.

ā€œAs we enter the endemic phase, let us get ready to welcome the world to a greener and cleaner Kuching this time. Let us work together to make the plastic straw a thing of the past,ā€ he added. ā€• DayakDaily
