KUCHING, July 13: The Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) Community Pickleball Training Month is in full swing with free training sessions held every Saturday of this month at the Picklepro Kuching, Tabuan Laru Family Club.
According to MBKS, the month-long community programme, which runs from July 1-31, aims to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among Kuching South residents.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng recently visited the ongoing training session to interact with players and show support for the community sports initiative.
With 168 participants registered so far, and more expressing interest in joining, the strong response shows just how popular pickleball has become.
In relation to this, Dr Sim, who is also the Sarawak Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, said efforts are underway to provide better access to pickleball facilities.
“The government is looking into creating more pickleball courts to cater for this rising interest. We must provide the right infrastructure to support active living,” he said during his visit.
He also expressed appreciation to MBKS for their efforts in organising such programmes, describing it as an excellent effort to provide more opportunities for Kuching South residents to stay active and healthy through physical activities.
Meanwhile, residents participating in the training sessions are also getting ready for the upcoming Kuching Festival Mayor’s Pickleball Championship, which will take place on August 2-3. The competition features the following categories:
- Women’s Doubles Open
- Men’s Doubles Open
- Mixed Doubles Open
- Veteran Men’s Doubles Open
Prizes up for grabs include cash rewards, quality sports equipment, medals, trophies, and certificates.
“This championship will be a great platform to promote sportsmanship, strengthen community ties, and showcase our sporting talent,” Dr Sim added. — DayakDaily
