KUCHING, March 19: In a proactive effort to curb mosquito-borne illnesses and uphold public hygiene, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched inspections at markets in Sungai Apong to ensure proper sanitation and waste management.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasised that effective drainage and the elimination of stagnant water are critical in preventing mosquito breeding.
“Markets are vital community spaces that must remain clean, safe, and well-managed. MBKS is committed to working closely with our hawkers and stakeholders to ensure that hygiene and public health standards are consistently upheld,” he said in a media statement today.
During the visit, Wee carried out on-site inspections of the market’s facilities, including sanitation systems and overall cleanliness.
He highlighted that regular maintenance, such as septic tank clearing, is essential in reducing mosquito breeding grounds and safeguarding community health.
The Mayor also engaged directly with hawkers, listening to their feedback and concerns while encouraging them to maintain high hygiene standards within their stalls.
He noted that traders’ support is pivotal in helping MBKS preserve a clean and safe environment for the public.
The market walkabout is part of MBKS’ ongoing efforts to ensure public facilities are well-maintained and that any issues are addressed promptly.
The council will continue conducting regular inspections and improvement works across all markets under its jurisdiction, aiming to provide a conducive environment for both traders and visitors.
Present during the inspections were Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairlady Judy Kho, acting city secretary Wong Ming Kong, and MBKS staff. — DayakDaily
