KUCHING, July 1: Organic waste composting at Petanak Market and Stutong Community Market has successfully diverted approximately 21 tonnes of organic waste from the landfill every quarter.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said this significant reduction in waste disposal will ultimately extend the lifespan of landfills in Kuching.
“In addition to that, we have received tremendous support from the public for our weekly Buy Back campaigns, as well as collection from drop-off centres and commercial lots. From January until May 2023, we estimate that we have diverted around 24 tonnes of recyclable items.
“Kuching South has an international reputation for being a tourist and healthy city. This is the result of the Kuching South Green Plan which aims at making Kuching South, a city with a high standard of public health and quality environment conducive for gracious living,” he said when addressing the launching of the City Cleanliness Month at MBKS Community Hall here today.
However, Wee emphasised that the challenge ahead is to sustain and improve the clean and healthy environment that the people of Kuching currently enjoy.
“To ensure city maintenance, the Council relies on the public to work hand in hand to ensure the upkeep of the city at tip top state, including waste management standards and ensuring no littering occurs.
“We must take responsibility not just for ourselves, but also for our children and future generations. Every Kuchingnite has a part to play in this endeavour. While we have made progress so far, environmental protection must always remain a priority,” he added.
Throughout this July, MBKS will be organising 14 activities, including village cleanups with the community. Starting with Kampung Lumba Kuda on July 2, followed by Kampung Tabuan Melayu on July 8 and Kampung Sungai Laru on July 15, these activities are aimed at instilling a sense of ownership and fostering clean and vibrant neighbourhoods.
Wee affirmed the Council’s commitment to making Kuching South a more pleasant and hospitable city for its residents and workers, underscoring that the responsibility lies with everyone in the community.
