KUCHING, Oct 23: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has completed the upgrading of the open space at Lorong Bayor Bukit 14, Tabuan Jaya here, providing the local community with a safer, greener and more inclusive recreational area.
The RM495,000 project was implemented under the Pembangunan Landskap Persekitaran Kehidupan programme funded by the Department of Landscape Malaysia (JLN) under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
According to MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, the project began on June 11 and was completed on Oct 1, 2025.
“In just a few months, this open space has been transformed into a beautiful, welcoming and lively park for the local community.
“It clearly shows how teamwork between the federal government and local authorities can bring real improvements that benefit everyone,” he said during the completion ceremony this morning.
The upgraded park now features a new walkway with proper drainage, a children’s playset, outdoor fitness equipment, gazebo, concrete table tennis table, hopscotch game, solar-powered lights and newly planted trees and shrubs.
“These new features make the area safer, greener and more comfortable for people of all ages.
“The park now provides a space where children can play, adults can exercise and senior citizens can walk, rest and enjoy the outdoors,” he added.
He noted that the upgrading works were carried out by SHUMS Enterprise through an open tender and completed within schedule.
Wee emphasised that the initiative reflects MBKS’ continuous efforts to create open spaces that promote healthy, active and inclusive living, while supporting the council’s vision of becoming both a Child-Friendly City and an Age-Friendly City.
“Since 2019, excluding the two-year Covid-19 period, we have been upgrading one park every year.
“The next one we are looking at is Hui Sing Park, which we expect to be fully completed in January next year,” he elaborated.
He added that the project also aligns with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly under Social Inclusivity and Environmental Sustainability, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) and Climate Action (SDG 13). — DayakDaily
