KUCHING, Oct 26: A ‘Bank Sampah’ concept pilot project is set to revolutionise waste management by focusing on education, social empowerment, collaboration, and technology to move towards a circular economy.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed his hope that this initiative would encourage people to come together to address the waste problem at its source by educating them on why and how to sort waste.

“MBKS will collect the waste and make sure that it is as responsibly processed as possible.

“In return for the segregated waste that is deposited with us at the ‘Bank Sampah’, the participants can redeem household items,” he said during the launching ceremony of the ‘Bank Sampah’ concept pilot project held at Kampung Kenyalang Community Carnival held at Kenyalang Park Community Association Hall (KPCA) here today.

He said based on the concept from Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), the implementation of the project also aims to provide community-based waste management services with an environmentally friendly and responsible approach.

He also said that in the next few months, MBKS intends to collaborate with malls, supermarkets, residential areas, and several producers, like plastic bottled water producers, to manage the waste related to their products at ‘Bank Sampah’. — DayakDaily
