KUCHING, March 23: Sarawak (excluding Limbang and Lawas) recorded a total power load reduction of 30.84 megawatts (MW) during Earth Hour 2025, saving an estimated 6,066 kilogrammes (kg) of carbon dioxide (CO2), according to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
In Kuching alone, energy consumption dropped by 14 MW — an improvement from 13.34 MW recorded during Earth Hour 2024 — contributing to a CO2 reduction of 2,744 kg.
Sharing the data on his official Facebook page last night (March 22), Wee reported that Sibu saw a reduction of 6.5 MW, saving 1,274 kg of CO2, compared to 7.68 MW (1,505 kg CO2 saved) in 2024.
Miri recorded a power reduction of 3.62 MW, cutting 709 kg of CO2 emissions, a significant increase from 0.77 MW (151 kg CO2 saved) in the previous year.
In Bintulu, the reduction was 5.73 MW, equivalent to 1,123 kg of CO2 saved, lower than the 11.38 MW reduction (2,230 kg CO2 saved) recorded in 2024.
For Sarawak as a whole (excluding Limbang and Lawas), the total reduction stood at 30.84 MW, saving 6,066 kg of CO2. This was slightly lower than the 33.17 MW reduction (6,501 kg CO2 saved) recorded in 2024.
Wee thanked participating agencies, shopping malls, supermarkets, schools, businesses and individuals for their contribution towards a greener future.
He also expressed appreciation to Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy), which assisted in monitoring the results.
At 8.30pm last night, Sarawak dimmed its lights in unison with millions around the world, embracing the spirit of Earth Hour 2025 in support of climate action and sustainability.
Across 70 locations statewide, iconic landmarks, shopping malls, hotels, and public spaces went dark, leaving cityscapes illuminated only by the soft glow of candlelight and the shimmer of the night sky.
Under the theme ‘Create the Biggest Hour on Earth’, the event — hosted by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) — saw 26 local councils participating in the symbolic switch-off, standing in solidarity with global efforts to tackle climate change.
This marks Sarawak’s fourth consecutive year of participating in Earth Hour, with previous hosts including the Sibu Municipal Council (2022), MBKS (2023), and Miri City Council (2024). — DayakDaily
