KUCHING, Aug 16: The Maxis Regional Internet Hub in Sarawak will enhance the user experience for Maxis customers by providing faster speeds and lower latency, allowing websites and videos to load faster and in higher quality.
According to a Maxis press handout, Maxis was the first telco to build a regional Internet hub with direct international content connectivity in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
“Since its construction, 58 per cent of the mobile traffic in East Malaysia has been successfully localised on the regional hub, with contributions from leading content delivery networks including Facebook, Google, Akamai, and Netflix,” Maxis said.
The launching of the hub was officiated at by Sarawak Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi today at the Maxis Technical Operations Centre, Bintawa here.
“The new regional Internet hub, located at Maxis Technical Operations Centre in Kuching, is an important network investment that will improve customer Internet experience while also catering to high data volume and anticipated volume growth.”
In the meantime, Julaihi stated in his speech that with the hub in Kuching, Sarawak, it is inevitable that the people of Sarawak will have a better connection experience, such as faster access to popular applications and downloading of educational content.
“This initiative from Maxis is able to increase digital availability as outlined in the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 for the first phase which needs to be achieved by 2025.
“I believe that every resident of this State should have access to a reliable Internet connection, particularly in rural areas.
“I hope that Maxis will continue to invest and assist the State government in realising our digital ambitions so that a greater number of people in this State can reap the benefits,” he said.
Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, urged telco service providers to continue collaborating with his ministry to provide high-speed Internet access not only in urban areas, but also in rural areas.
“The digital gap between urban and rural areas must be closed; if possible, there should be no difference… if it can be fast (broadband network) in the city, it must also be fast in rural areas,” he added.
Earlier in his speech, Maxis chief executive officer Goh Seow Eng said: “Our regional Internet hub provides our Maxis customers in Sarawak superior user experience enabling them to enjoy higher speeds and lower latency.
“Most of their web pages and videos will load faster and the videos will be in image quality.
“Businesses in Sarawak using technologies like cloud-based services, IoT applications, and data analytics enjoy similar marked improvements in speed and latency as well.”
Among others present at the event was Maxis chief network officer Abdul Karim Fakir Ali. — DayakDaily
