KUCHING, Jan 12: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has approved seven additional Malaysia Airlines flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

According to Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) Group chief executive officer Izham Ismail, this was followed by nine additional flights to Sibu and one additional flight for the Kota Kinabalu to Kuching route.

“For Firefly, the low-cost arm of the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), it has obtained three additional flights for the Penang to Kuching route,” he said during a meeting with Minister for Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Dato Lee Kim Shin at MAB Academy in Petaling Jaya, on Jan 11.

Lee was accompanied by his deputy Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Dato Henry Harry Jinep and MOTS officials.

He added Malaysia Airlines has also increased its domestic flight frequency for Kuala Lumpur-Miri to three times daily and four times daily on Monday, Friday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, Lee proposed to MAG to look into better flight connectivity for leisure and business travelers to and from Sarawak.

Additionally, he suggested to MAB to come up with marketing strategies to bring more international passengers into Sarawak through their international networks and partners from about 1000 destinations worldwide through their code sharing and a number of airlines partnership arrangements.

Other matters that were discussed includes rural air services issue in Sarawak, the potential new routes, airfare and potential areas of collaboration with MOTS. — DayakDaily
