KUCHING, Jan 2: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik is expected to announce his resignation in a press conference to be called at 4.30pm today.
Malay Mail has reported its sources that Maszlee had handed his resignation letter to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier this afternoon.
The sources also revealed that the Prime Minister had accepted Maszlee’s resignation.
However, the report said the sources were tight-lipped on the reasons for his resignation.
Speculation is also rife that the minister had been pressured to step down ahead of a minor Federal Cabinet reshuffle which might see the axing of several deputy ministers.
Since helming the ministry, Maszlee has been heavily criticised for the several education policies he implemented, including the introduction of Jawi for primary schools.
The Simpang Renggam MP, who is also a member of Bersatu supreme leadership council, was appointed the Education Minister on May 21, 2018 after a public outcry when Dr Mahathir initially named himself for the portfolio. —DayakDaily
