Masses in Catholic churches suspended from Jan 18 to 31

Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Simon Poh

KUCHING, Jan 17: All masses and services in Catholic churches throughout the Archdiocese of Kuching and houses of worship in Sarawak will be suspended until Jan 31.

Catholic Archbishop of Kuching Simon Poh said this is in line with the implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) in Sibu and Conditional MCO (CMCO) in all other divisions in the state starting tomorrow (Jan 18).

In the meantime, he said, Catholics may continue to join the online masses on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/arch.kuching/.

Adding on, he said this coming week of Jan 18 to 25 has also been dedicated as a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity themed “Abide in My love and you shall bear much fruit”.

In view of the recent increase in local Covid-19 cases, Poh urged Catholics, Christians and followers of all faiths to come together to contain this new wave of coronavirus in Sarawak.

Poh who is also the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) chairman called on all to respect the MCO and CMCO inter-district travel restrictions and comply with standard operating procedures approved by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

Unnecessary trips, he added, should be cut down and social gatherings must not be organised. Meanwhile, face masks should be worn in public at all times and social distancing must be observed.

“From recent SDMC daily reports, we can see widespread Covid-19 cases in many places throughout Sarawak.

“At these initial days when positive cases are just starting to surface, this is the crucial window period for contact tracing to isolate positive cases and to break the cycle of infection,” he said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
