KUCHING, Sept 21: Police are investigating two separate incidents involving firebombing and objects suspected to be explosive firecracker materials being hurled into convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman on Sept 20.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said police had received two reports over the incidents, while other premises yet to lodge reports have been urged to do so immediately.
Preliminary investigations found that both incidents had a similar modus operandi, involving two masked men dressed in dark clothing entering the premises before throwing objects believed to contain explosive or flammable materials into the stores.
The actions caused an explosion, property damage and fire in one of the incidents.
No deaths or serious injuries were reported.
Police are investigating the motive and probing the cases under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine for mischief involving fire or explosives intended to destroy a house or building.
Police are also working to identify and arrest the suspects, analyse the materials used, examine CCTV footage and determine whether the two incidents are linked.
Meanwhile, police said viral allegations that the convenience stores were selling online gambling “top-ups” would also be investigated.
Action may be taken, including seeking the relevant local authorities to revoke the business licences if offences are established.
Police urged the public not to speculate on the incidents as this could interfere with investigations.
Business premises owners have also been advised to strengthen security measures and immediately report any suspicious individuals or vehicles.
