KUCHING, Oct 9: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said he would instruct all PRS parliamentarians to support the proposed amendment to the Federal Constitution that is aimed at returning Sarawak and Sabah’s status as equal partners in the Federation of Malaysia.

“If Parliament tables the Bill that allows Sarawak and Sabah to have equal status with Malaya as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), PRS is all for it.

“I will instruct all three PRS MPs to support the bill. I am sure all Sarawak MPs, including Sarawak Pakatan Harapan MPs, will support the Bill once the details are known,” Masing said in a statement today.

He was responding to the statement made by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law) Datuk Liew Vui Kwong in Kuching yesterday. Liew told a press conference that he came to meet GPS MPs to convince them to agree to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution.

Liew claimed that once the amendment was done, everything else with regards to MA63 would fall into place. These include oil royalties, equal distribution and regional development.

Masing, who is also a deputy chief minister, however, stressed that PRS would only grant support for this particular Bill.

“For other Bills, PRS MPs will only grant their support based on the merits of the Bills introduced. Our support this time should not be taken as a norm but an exceptional case,” he emphasised. — DayakDaily
