KUCHING, March 9: Satria and Satrina, two Rhinoceros Hornbills mascots who encapsulate the spirit of sportsmanship, are now back with a new style in conjunction with the upcoming Malaysian Games (Sukma).
Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah presented the prizes to the mascots’ designer, Ikhbar Ruzaini Abang@Ebai, during the launch of Sukma 2024, which was held at Pullman Hotel here today.
The 42-year-old freelance designer brought home a cash prize of RM10,000 and a trophy.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Ikhbar said he designed the latest look for the two mascots from head to toe.
Prior to the designing process, he conducted research on the hornbills, stating that he had to be extra careful about their appearances.
“For example, the male Satria has red eyes while the female Satrina has whitish-blue eyes, depicting the actual characteristics of their species.
“To an extent, I collaborated with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to learn more about the detailed nature of the hornbills and prevent any issue of sensitivity relating to the animal,” he said.
Additionally, he said he used complex colouring in designing the mascots. Nevertheless, the hornbills were styled in three main colours of the Sarawak flag, namely red, yellow, and black.
He also mentioned that he had designed 47 different icons for the mascots, 37 of which depicted the mascots in various sports action and 10 in Para Sukma.
Apart from Ikhbar, the Sukma 2024 launching ceremony witnessed the prize presentation to two more winners: Azrilalfatt Hassim for creating Sukma 2024’s new logo and Kaderi Awang Lihi for composing the official song ‘Sukma Sarawak, Kesukanan dan Perpaduan’.
Azrilalfatt brought home a cash prize of RM10,000 and a trophy, while Kaderi bagged a cash prize of RM20,000 and a trophy. — DayakDaily
