KUCHING, June 30: A Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAS) flight attendant was arrested at Melbourne Tullamarine International Airport, Australia, on May 13 for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin into the country.
When contacted by DayakDaily, MAS communication department confirmed the arrest.
In a statement sent to DayakDaily, the airlines said, “Malaysia Airlines confirms that a member of its cabin crew has been detained by the Australian authorities on May 13 this year.
“The airline is unable to comment further due to ongoing investigations and pending court date. Malaysia Airlines has very strict policies and guidelines that govern staff conduct and all staff are required to adhere to the airline’s Code of Business Conduct with the highest level of integrity.”
According to The Herald Sun, the 33-year-old flight attendant allegedly tried to sneak in 3.5kg of heroin worth AS$1.4mil (RM4.18mil).
The report said the flight attendant behaved “suspiciously” after grabbing his checked luggage from the baggage carousel.
Police arrested the suspect, who had flown in from Kuala Lumpur, after 10 plastic-wrapped packets of heroin was found inside a jacket. — DayakDaily
