Marine Police seizes RM6.2 mln worth of unlicensed frozen meat in Bintulu

KUCHING, May 20: The Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force confiscated various types of frozen meat suspected of being imported without a valid permit with an estimated total value of RM6,220,900.16 in a raid at a premises here, recently.

According to acting commander of the Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force, Supt Rusdin Banin, the raid was carried out during the implementation of Op Taring Khazanah a premises along Jalan Sultan Iskandar in Bintulu last Thursday (May 15).

“The premises was suspected of being used as storage for the frozen meat to be distributed to the local market without any verification documents from the authorities.

“A local man believed to be the owner of the premises has been detained to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 9(1) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999 for importing livestock or livestock-based products without a valid permit.

If convicted, the offender can be fined not more than RM50,000 or imprisoned not more than two years or both.

In addition, investigations are also being conducted under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the Environmental Quality (Amendment) Act 2012, and the Food Act 1983. — DayakDaily
