KUCHING, Dec 18: Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong hopes for the Serian District Council (MDS) to be elevated into a municipal council in the next few years.

Manyin said, in a recent meeting with MDS, the district council’s secretary have presented their shortcomings and other things that needed to be addressed in order for the MDS to be upgraded to municipal councils like Padawan Municipal Council and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).

“Everything starts with dreams, and for the next few years, I believed that it will be realised, and hopefully it is still in our times,” said Manyin in his speech during the Serian District Council 60th Diamond Jubilee dinner held at Borneo Convention Center Kuching (BCCK), today.

Meanwhile, Manyin, who is also Tebedu assemblyman, calls for the Serian district councilors to come up with a unique approach to make Serian one of the “must-stop-town” for travelers passing by.

He emphasised that although the cleanliness of the town is important to attract visitors, there should be another thing that really makes Serian as a “must-stop-town”.

According to Manyin, he had previously listed out the option, which is cleanliness and what Serian can offer.

He said not just Maggie mee, Kolo mee, and Sarawak Laksa, but other varieties of local delicacies too, where the Iban and the Bidayuh can come out with their own delicacies, the same goes to the Malay and Chinese, so that there is a lot of varieties of foods, including fusion foods, for the people to try.

“For the cleanliness, it should not only be about the outdoor cleanliness but the coffee shops and shops too, including the toilet cleanliness.

“So I would like to put this as a challenge to all the councilors, and I think they should take this opportunity, although it is not that easy and will take time,” he added.

Also present during the dinner were Bengoh assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Balai Ringin assemblyman Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben, Semuja assemblyman John Ilus and other distinguished guests. –DayakDaily.
