SIBU, Sept 21: Sibu has the potential to host larger-scale golf tournaments, backed by strong interest in the sport and Sibu Golf Club’s more than five decades of experience organising tournaments.
According to a TVS report, Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Sarawak government is prepared to work with the club to explore opportunities for bigger golf events in the future.
He said the club could identify areas of cooperation with the ministry and submit applications through the proper channels to seek support for tournament organisation.
“If I am still overseeing youth and sports next year and in the following years, there will certainly be many opportunities for us to work together to organise larger events.
“The club can also apply for annual grants from the ministry to support its activities,” he said when officiating the prize presentation ceremony of the 23rd Sibu Amateur Open Golf Championship 2026 at Sibu Golf Club yesterday (Sept 20).
He said maintaining a golf club and its facilities involves high costs, making support from both the government and private sector important to sustain the sport’s development.
“Sibu has many people who are passionate about and love this sport. Maintaining an entire golf course is not easy.
“So, we need to work together, with the government and private sector providing support,” he added.
Abdul Karim also said facilities at Sibu Golf Club could be further improved if the city hosted larger tournaments, particularly the golf course and supporting facilities.
He said the Sarawak government was also expanding golf facilities statewide, with three new golf courses already approved in areas including Kuching, Belawai, and Beraya in Miri.
He hoped Sibu Golf Club would continue improving its facilities and tournament standards to pave the way for more prestigious golf events in Sibu.
At the championship, Anson Yeo Boon Xiang won the Men’s Gross category with 206 strokes, while Livia Lau Kiew Lin claimed the Women’s Gross title with 239 strokes.
Roslan Kassim emerged as the Men’s Nett champion with 137 strokes, while Lau Jie Tin Miki won the Women’s Nett category with 137 strokes. — DayakDaily
